REIMUND C. REICH FOUNDATION

Developing a second stage women's shelter

Task: To develop a concept for a follow-up to a women's shelter. It had to be sustainable in the long term and bring about systemic change. At the same time, the foundation had to be positioned as an active shaper of the city of Hamburg.

Challenge: The demand for women's shelters far exceeds the supply. This is also due to the fact that the length of stay for women and their children is usually significantly longer than the standard length of stay. These women need far more than a roof over their heads: They need childcare, psychological support, help with employment, etc. The real challenge for these women and children only begins after their release from the shelter.

Solution: A comprehensive usage and operating concept for a follow-up women's shelter facility, the "House of New Beginning," as a necessary aid for the reintegration of women and their children leaving women's shelters into everyday life. On this basis, the foundation is creating a solution combining the property, services for the women and their children, and an active, inclusive community, as well as close cooperation with all relevant stakeholders.

Implementation: What makes the follow-up facility so special is its needs-based offerings to a highly diverse target group. The location should be central and urban, amidst an infrastructure that allows for short distances to daycare, schools, daily necessities, and public transportation. This forms an important foundation for the reintegration of the women and their children. Through a curated care and management concept, the follow-up facility will be filled with daily life and will also be open to local residents. This will contribute significantly to the successful reintegration of the women and their children.

Impact: The project enables women to achieve sustainable reintegration into the labor market and society by closing the gap between shelter and independent living. At the same time, it strengthens the protection system in Hamburg, raises public awareness of domestic violence, and serves as a model for similar measures in other regions.
